It is a cry that goes to the heart of the greater truth that a football club is part of the very lifeblood of the community in which it plays, that it belongs – in the truest sense of the word – not to whichever consortium of businessmen might happen to be holding the purse strings this week, but to the fans who support it, year in year out, come what may. Fans of Portsmouth – who this week will have been struggling to come to terms with the club passing into the hands of its fourth owner this season at the same time as the manager is accused of frequenting a Thai massage parlour near the club’s training ground – will rightly protest that Portsmouth FC is not simply in the city, it is the city.
