RECESSION: Job losses and foreclosures are forcing extended families — grandparents and their adult children, aunts and uncles and other cousins — to pool incomes and save expenses by living under a single roof. Housing advocates say such moves slash costs but can  boost noise, crowding, stress, clutter and the need for privacy.
BOATING: The rough economy has battered Minnesota’s boat industry. The evidence can be seen in overstocked showrooms, half-empty parking lots at boat manufacturing plants, and the bankruptcy this week of Minneapolis-based boat maker Genmar Holdings, Inc., the parent of Larson and several other lines of boats. But used boats continue to sell well and Minnesota’s boating lifestyle appears to be taking the downturn in stride.
PROSTITUTION:  Minneapolis police are pursuing federal charges against a group of at least 30 well-to-do business owners, lawyers, accountants and mortgage bankers who frequented a high-priced prostitution operation. The men, in their early-40s to mid-60s, called themselves “The Minnesota Nice Guys.”
