The main lender at the center of the flood of bad mortgages was WMC Mortgage, which appeared to self-inflict its mortgage losses by reckless inattention to the shaky loans brought to it by brokers, as the Star Tribune reported in 1999.

According to a new investigative piece by the Center for Public Integrity, blue-chip firm General Electric bought WMC for $500 million in 2004, let the wild lending continue, and eventually took a $1 billion bath before shutting the lender down in 2007. WMC hired ex-strippers to peddle mortgages and marginalized whistleblowers, CPI reports, while continuing its loose lending.

FARGO – Three strippers who worked hundreds of hours at a Fargo club say they’re owed more than $166,000 in wages, compensation and so-called house fees they paid for each shift.
A federal lawsuit against Ferny Properties LLC was filed last week by Heidi Current of Fargo, Tara Hester of Minneapolis and La’Krystal Jackson of Eden Prairie, Minn.
Ferny Properties owns The Northern, which bills itself online as Fargo’s only gentlemen’s club. The women worked at the club for various stretches between 2008 and 2011, the lawsuit said.

The women said any stripper who arrived late for her shift or left early was required to pay a fine of $100. The club also required dancers to pay $55 for each shift, which was distributed to other employees, including bouncers, the lawsuit said.

Todd Fedora, a Duluth city councilor and DEDA member who has been a vocal critic
of the NorShor purchase, said: “The devil will be in the details.”
If DEDA sells the NorShor and Temple buildings to Sherman for a nominal sum, Fedora said taxpayers could be out the $2.6 million the authority spent to acquire the structures in June.
“That’s money DEDA could have used to promote real economic development,” he said.
But DEDA President John Heino contends the purchase of the NorShor should be viewed in a larger context and as more than a simple business transaction. He said the authority is trying to serve as a catalyst to transform a historic theater that had fallen into disrepair and that had devolved into a strip club in a portion of town where significant other investments were being made.
